What Makes A Good Essay: 7 Important Things

Most people can put together an essay if given enough motivation but if you want to produce a great essay that you can be proud to submit, here seven important factors to consider.

  • A good topic
  • Your topic is the starting point that directs the rest of the essay. It is extremely difficult, though not impossible, to create an amazing essay out of a mediocre topic but you really shouldn’t have to. Put in the work ahead of time to find the best topic possible.

  • Evidence
  • Every point that you mention in your essay should be adequately supported. Without this, you seem far less authoritative and none of your arguments will stand up to scrutiny.

  • Writing style
  • It’s not just what you say but how you say it. When you make your points. you need to know when to be strictly academic and when to employ your wit or when to be a bit dramatic. These little things can set you apart from the crowd.

  • Brevity
  • Anything that has ever been said can be said the long way or the short way. Treat every word as if it were an expense to you and reduce your writing to the pure distilled essence of whatever you are trying to say. Unnecessary words and phrases can bore your reader or make you seem like you are trying to make up words to meet a quota.

  • Proofreading
  • An excellent essay can lose much of its efficacy when there are spelling errors or misused words scattered throughout. Save yourself some embarrassment and look through your work with care. Never depend entirely on your software to proofread for you because you’ll still need to depend on that human touch to pick up the more subtle mistakes.

  • Punctuality
  • If you submit your essay late, you may end up receiving no credit for it at all despite its brilliance. Be mindful of approaching deadlines.

  • Objectivity
  • Everyone has an opinion. Most likely your essay is not gong to benefit from being an unabashed display of yours. Express your point but remember that it comes across much more professionally if you do so in a dry dispassionate manner without making statements about the opposite point of view that cannot be proven.

Like all rules, there may be essays that improve by leaps and bounds when you break one or even all of these. Use your discretion and write as you feel called to.
