Both football and basketball are great sports for recreation. According to some recent studies, the amount of calories a person burns when playing a casual basketball game or flag football is the same. However, the differences on professional levels keep these games far apart.

Football is the most popular game in the U.S., and basketball is number three on this list. This is a hollow advantage when you consider the fact that America is the only country where people play football professionally. On the other hand, basketball is popular all over the globe. The fact that it can be played indoors also helps promote this game in schools and various institutions. Some companies today even introduce basketball as a type of recreational break activity. The simplest form of this game can be played with a trash bin and a rudimentary ball made of crumpled sheets of paper. On a more professional level, basketball will only require a pair of good sports shoes and a ball. This makes it a very affordable game when compared to the rather expensive pads and other equipment necessary for football.

Basketball is an aerobic activity. This means that it keeps the body in motion at all times. Aerobic exercises are good for cardiovascular systems, and effective for weight loss because they burn both fats and carbohydrates. Football, on the other hand, is an anaerobic activity. This type of exercise consists of strenuous activity bursts, separated by low activity periods. Football can be compared with high-resistance training, especially in the linemen position. Main disadvantages of professional football are long waiting periods if the most common two-platoon system. Also, unlike basketball, where a person can play almost any position during a game, football players are often limited to only defense or offense.

There is some risk of injury present in any sport, both on professional and recreational levels. The difference in this case, lies in the severity of the traumas. Basketball injuries are mostly limited to sprained ankles, as well as pulled and torn muscles. Football players are susceptible to the same type of injuries; but they also often suffer broken bones, concussions, and spinal traumas. The chances of a football player sustaining an injury that will end their career are much higher.

There is no saying which game is better between football or basketball. Both of them are very good choices for recreation. However, in terms of professional career, basketball offers more opportunities and has fewer risks.
